“A Cup with a Hole and Spilled Water”

Water and a cup. Water exists by being contained within a cup, and a cup gains its practical value through the water it holds. Now, imagine a cup filled with water but with a hole at the bottom, placed on a table before a thirsty user. As the user lifts the cup, the water spills out—liberated from the constraints of its container, yet at the same time, losing its ground and facing the imminent risk of evaporation. The cup, once a transparent object subordinate to utility, paradoxically asserts its presence through its dysfunction—the hole renders it useless, yet in doing so, it frustrates the user and highlights its own existence. In Spilled Water, visitors who come to drink the “water” of images from the “cup” of painting are led to experience an exceptional condition—one that recalls the inherent dilemma between the two elements.
